SEIU Observes National Nursing Home Week
May 11-17 is National Nursing Home Week, and SEIU salutes nursing home residents as well as their caregivers -- both those caregivers in our Union as well as those still struggling for a voice on the job. The theme of this year's NNH Week is "Love is Ageless," which serves as a reminder to respect the dignity of residents and caregivers alike. SEIU members reiterate our call to couple such important recognition with concrete improvements to better value caregivers' contributions and to ensure consistently safe staffing on nursing home floors.
Carol Lafferty Wins 2008 Veronica Davis Award
Heartland of Beckley's SEIU District 1199 Executive Board member Carol Lafferty was the recipient of the Union's long term care division award at the 2008 Leadership Assembly in Ft. Mitchell, Ky. Named in honor of the late District 1199 Secretary Treasurer Veronica Davis, the award highlights the extraordinary dedication of a member-leader from the long term care division. On the adjoining video clip, view Lafferty accept the honor from SEIU 1199 Executive Vice President Becky Williams.
Long Term Care Division - What We're All About
Long Term Care givers in America often receive poverty-level wages, little training and no health coverage, conditions that force nearly 100 percent turnover. SEIU District 1199’s Long Term Care members are folks who work in nursing homes, home care, mental health and MRDD. By joining SEIU District 1199, long term caregivers unite with residents, clients and their families, advocates, community leaders and elected officials to win new and better standards for America’s LTC facilities including:
- Safe staffing levels that are easy to understand and enforce
- Reasonable case loads that allow for quality services
- Comprehensive training
- Careers for caregivers with benefits and wages that help attract and keep qualified staff
- State and federal funding systems that reward and encourage safe staffing and good working conditions.
Our members work and live in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, serving a quickly growing population that needs long term care. We dedicate ourselves to providing the best quality care possible and raising standards. To provide the best possible care for your family members, the most vulnerable members in our communities, we must also be able to care for ourselves and our families.
